The final of the Dynafit MOONtain Races Courchevel on Tuesday 17 September was prepared under the snow. At daybreak, 5 centimetres of snow covered the ground at the Grand Plan refuge, at an altitude of 2,280 m, forcing the alpine herders to bring down the cows grazing near the refuge. But as the day went on, the clouds gradually cleared to make way for the sun and allow the final of the second edition of this night trail, held every Tuesday evening of the full moon since 25 June.

For this last climb of the season, among the runners you could spot a fox, a sailor and even Fred from the Flintstones. It must be said that to celebrate this final, registration was free for all participants in fancy dress, and a special prize-giving for the best costumes was planned at the finish.

The patron of the Dynafit MOONtain Races Courchevel, Erik Clavery, the 2011 trail running world champion of the Adidas team, was at the start of this 9.3 km time trial (100 m of descent and 800 m of elevation gain). He finished first after 52min56s of racing and told us: “Compared with my first outing on 25 June, I lose 3 minutes, but tonight the conditions were difficult. With the days getting shorter, this time the race was run entirely in the dark by headlamp, whereas in June we were able to do a large part of the course in daylight. I love the atmosphere, the friendliness and the format of this race, of which I am the patron. I will be back again next year.”

Mickael Blanchard took second place in 54min10s ahead of Rémi Berchet in 56min01s.

In the women’s race, Sylvie Murat won in 1h11min50s ahead of Sophie Haubois (1h12min06s) and Elise De Rancourt (1h13min21s).

The records of the Dynafit MOONtain Races Courchevel 2013 were set for the second year running by Julien Rancon in 48min22s and Stéphanie Duc in 59min49s. As a reward, they will receive a cheque for €500 and a full outfit from the partner Dynafit. They will also be awarded the titles of Alps Skyrunning champions by the association France Skyrunning, which had selected this race for the Alps Skyrunning championship.

To finish the 2013 season of the Dynafit Moontain Races Courchevel in style, Lionel Blanc, the keeper of the Grand Plan refuge, and his whole team once again did everything to offer the runners a good Savoyard meal with the soup from the cauldron, and for the occasion Guillaume Prin, president of the organising association “Courchevel Sports Alpinisme”, came to enliven the party by playing the transverse flute.

Courchevel Vertical Challenge 2013

To be ranked in the Courchevel Vertical Challenge 2013 (CVC), you had to take part at least once in each of the 3 events held in Courchevel. To do so, you had to put on your touring skis for the Dynafit Ski Touring Courchevel (DSTC) held every Wednesday of the winter from 12 December to 27 March 2013, get on your bike for the Cyclo’Courch (every Wednesday from 3 July to 7 August and on Sunday 18 August 2013) and lace up your trainers for the Dynafit MOONtain Races Courchevel (DMRC) (every Tuesday evening of the full moon from 28 May to 17 September 2013).

The best times in each discipline were taken into account for the CVC 2013 standings, and Yoann Sert produced the best performance of 2013 in 2h10min56s, after setting a time of 24min46s in the DSTC, 50min41s in the Cyclo’Courch and 55min28s in the DMRC. In the women’s race, Stéphanie Duc dominated in 2h33min40s with a time of 30min55s in the DSTC, 1h05min55s in the Cyclo’Courch and 59min49s in the DMRC.
